Blackmon Mooring Celebrates 60 Years
Founded in 1948, Blackmon Mooring has provided the Higher Standard of service for six decades.
1948, like 2008, was a leap year. It was also the year that best friends Bill Blackmon and Scott Mooring took the “leap” into business, opening a furniture cleaning business together in Fort Worth under the name Blackmon Mooring. They quickly added furniture re-upholstery and rug cleaning to their service lines. Bill oversaw operations while his partner, Scott, handled the sales. Bill’s wife Genevieve was the telemarketer, calling people all day asking for their business.
The company’s first big job was to clean the cushions at the TCU football stadium, and in compensation, they received the kingly sum of $17.50. Shortly thereafter, Gulf Oil called them to lay three floors of carpet in their offices, and Blackmon Mooring was in the carpet business. Blackmon Mooring earned an early reputation for providing quality work and exceptional customer service, which laid the foundation for sixty years of success.
In May of 1949, Bill and Genevieve experienced disaster when their home was covered by the raging Trinity River, but that disaster also brought positive change for the couple. On that day in May, the Trinity River levee broke and water raced over the top of their home and hundreds of others. The Blackmon Mooring team picked up all the wet carpet and furniture and cleaned it. It was their first foray into disaster recovery and would eventually lead to a full line of fire and water restoration services.
In 1967, Bill met the man who had invented a steam cleaning process. Bill bought and patented the technology and named the process “steamatic” cleaning. This eventually led to franchise operations not just in Texas, but throughout the world. Over the next two decades, they opened Blackmon Mooring locations in Houston, Oklahoma City, Lubbock, Amarillo, Austin, Midland/ Odessa, and San Antonio, and added services such as air duct cleaning.
In the past several years, Blackmon Mooring has expanded their service line to include plumbing, heating, and air conditioning, offering their customers the same quality of service that they have come to expect since 1948. Bill Blackmon’s vision in 1948 to serve the customer with incredible levels of care has proven to be a winning philosophy throughout the past 60 years, with many more to come.
